Our latest bespoke project saw us design and build a large live edge oak dining table for The Bull in Charlbury — an 18-seater statement piece handcrafted from solid English oak and created specifically for the historic dining space within the restored 16th-century inn.
Some projects are measured in metres. Others are measured in the stories they will go on to hold.
Located in the heart of the Cotswolds, The Bull has stood at the centre of Charlbury life since the early 1500s. For centuries, travellers, locals and visitors have gathered there around food, drink and conversation. Today, following a thoughtful restoration, the inn continues that tradition with the same warmth and character that has defined it for generations.
When approached to create a large bespoke dining table for the space, we knew the piece needed to feel completely at home within the building. Not simply furnished into the room, but rooted within it.
The finished table was created as a bespoke adaptation of our Edges dining table design, reimagined at a much larger scale to comfortably seat eighteen people. Designed for shared dining and hospitality settings, the piece brings together natural materials, craftsmanship and functionality in equal measure.
Whether hosting celebratory dinners, long pub lunches or quiet morning coffees, the table was built around the idea that great spaces are shaped by the people who gather within them.
As with all of our handmade oak dining tables, the timber itself guided the process.
We selected character-rich English oak boards full of natural movement, texture and grain variation, preserving the live edges that tell the story of the tree from which they came. Rather than refining away these natural details, we choose to celebrate them — allowing every curve, split and ripple within the timber to remain visible in the finished piece.
The result is a large live edge dining table with a strong sense of individuality and warmth; a piece that feels both architectural and organic at the same time.
Back in our Wiltshire workshop, every component was carefully handcrafted and assembled before being transported to Charlbury for installation. Creating a solid oak dining table of this scale requires detailed planning and precision, but the ambition remains the same as every piece that leaves our workshop: to create furniture that is enduring, honest and beautifully made.
The setting could hardly be more fitting.
Standing prominently on Sheep Street, The Bull balances historic character with contemporary comfort — exposed beams, open fires and Cotswold stone sitting alongside thoughtfully restored interiors. The building’s long history and welcoming atmosphere made it the perfect home for a table designed to bring people together.
Seeing the finished installation settled into the space was a reminder of why we value bespoke furniture projects so highly. Every commission begins with a room, a purpose and a story. The furniture simply becomes the bridge between them.
While entirely unique to The Bull, this project was based on our Edges dining table — one of our signature live edge oak dining table designs. By adapting the proportions, scale and layout specifically for the space, we were able to create a truly bespoke piece while retaining the natural character and craftsmanship central to the original design.
Large bespoke dining tables like this are increasingly being commissioned not only for hospitality spaces, but also for open-plan homes, entertaining spaces and contemporary country interiors where natural materials and shared dining sit at the heart of the room.
Long after the sawdust has settled and the tools have been put away, the life of the table is only just beginning.
We like to imagine the years ahead: conversations shared across its surface, celebrations marked around its edges and memories quietly accumulating within the grain.
Exactly as good oak furniture should.
From our Wiltshire workshop, we handcraft furniture with nature and wellness in mind.
