Forest to Home talks you through how to capture modern farmhouse style in your kitchen.
A cosy yet contemporary look, modern farmhouse style is proving to be one of the biggest interior design trends of the decade so far. So, what exactly is it, and how do you incorporate the aesthetic into your own kitchen?
Start by envisaging the cosiness and comfort you’d find in a traditional farmhouse, then add some sleek, modern elements into the mix. Expect a big emphasis on organic materials and characterful imperfections, blended with clean lines and a neutral colour palette.
Here’s how to ensure your kitchen looks rustic, yet refined…
Mix it up: Modern farmhouse style is a happy marriage of history and modernity. Reflect this in your kitchen by blending antique or vintage accessories with more contemporary pieces, such as a modern canvas.
Ditch the clutter: Forget shelves laden with kitschy accessories, this is a space that needs to be simple, clean and fresh. Think minimalist overtones – things need to be kept cosy without being fussy.
Expose beams: Beams add softness and character to a space, so celebrate them instead of hiding them away. Likewise, exposed brickwork really lends that farmhouse feel.
Embrace form and function: Tradition and history are integral to this design trend, but there’s a big emphasis on pieces that offer practicality too. Take our solid oak Country Dining Table for example. With its rough sawn base, dovetail joints and end drawer, it’s inspired by that design classic, the traditional refectory table. But while it has the look, texture and unique character of an antique, it’s in perfect repair.
Add eclectic accents: Freshen up a rustic space by using clean, contemporary lines to create contrast. Try setting an industrial light fixture against a raised beam ceiling for example.
Go natural underfoot: Flagstones, timber floorboards or even sisal help reinforce that connection with the great outdoors. Add an inviting sense of warmth by layering woollen rugs on top.
Keep it neutral: Pale creams, beiges, whites and light greys form the perfect modern farmhouse palette. Welcoming and yet versatile, they’ll team perfectly with natural materials, such as timber or stone.
Celebrate character: While crisp lines add that contemporary edge, organic, tactile surfaces and natural imperfections are also integral to the modern farmhouse trend. And our Elements Dining Table perfectly embodies this harmony. Here, the angled ash base beautifully contrasts with a rustic, honey-hued oak top, with stunning live edges and swirling grain patterns.
