One size rarely fits all. The very nature of how we work at Forest to Home means made-to-measure proportions are part and parcel of how we craft furniture. But when we say, ‘bespoke’ we really do mean tailor-made, where we make tables, kitchen islands, storage and wherever your imagination takes you. The scale is up for grabs, the design language and the timber too, and the end destination can be anywhere from home to hotel to a retail space.
The proof’s in the pudding though, so read on for a case (study) in point…
Aiming high with a royal commission, in 2021, we were asked to craft two bespoke tables for the office at the Windsor Estate. At the heart of this project was the tale of the timber, because where better to source it from than Windsor Great Park itself?
Taking from nature is something to be done with great care and consciousness. As part of the ongoing programme to manage the woodland within Windsor Great Park, the timber was felled as part of the control measures to make sure the forest remains healthy and thriving. The oak used in the tables is thought to be 200-300 years old and would have been designed for firewood without trained eyes seeing its potential – timber purchaser Rupert Schofield and our own designers too of course.
It was cut, planked and left to season for two years before we cherry-picked which vast slabs of ancient oak were right for our commission. We cleaned them up here in our Wiltshire workshop to reveal the raw timber’s rich texture and rare chocolate tones. Highly prized by sustainably-minded furniture makers, Brown or Tiger Oak takes its exceptional colour from a fungus, which attacks the roots of the tree. This results in stunning natural staining and intensely brown tiger stripes, mingled with shimmering gold. To us, they were character traits ideal for the table’s surface, statement base and its future home.
The chosen slabs measured a vast 4m in length, which we transformed into a pair of unique tables with live edges which work side by side or can be placed end-to-end to create a banquet fit for king and queen.
“Like each and every one of our bespoke creations, this is one-of-a-kind furniture that wholeheartedly celebrates nature’s wild beauty.” – Will, co-founder of Forest to Home
