This week, we’re celebrating Grown in Britain Week starting Monday (October 12). This is an annual celebration and focus on the valuable contribution that forestry and home-grown timber products make to the UK economy.
A week-long series of activity and events throughout the UK, GIB Week has been organised as part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the nation’s forestry sector, which contributes £1 billion to the UK economy and supports 170,000 mostly rural jobs.
If you are unaware of the work GIB Week’s organisers – Grown in Britain – this important organisation has led the drive for more innovation in the use of British timber and is supporting the development of local added-value processing in order to facilitate a reduction in imports.
From our Wiltshire workshops, Forest to Home is a proud holder of the Grown in Britain Chain of Custody Certificate, (which you can read about here) and our commitment to ethical and environmentally responsible furniture runs right through our core.
This year’s GIB Week, activity from the team at Grown in Britain will focus around a week of events celebrating homegrown timber in all its forms. Keep an eye out for a project delivered by our sister brand Forest & Maker which will be showcased!
Also taking place is the online National Forestry Conference (which our MD William Hibbert will be watching). Speakers include Sir William Worsley (Forestry Commission Chair), Mark Bridgeman (CLA President), Professor Gideon Henderson (Defra Chief Scientific Adviser) and Sir Charles Burrell (Knepp Estate).
Welcoming the launch of Grown in Britain Week, Tony Hackney, the company’s chief executive, said: “The Grown in Britain Campaign comes at a critical time for UK producers – both to highlight the importance of timber to the UK and to galvanising industry and Government support for British forestry and forestry products. There has never been a better time to celebrate UK timber and the role it plays in improving and driving forward our economy.”
William Hibbert, our Co-Founder and Managing Director is looking forward a week of focus on British timbers and a sustainable supply chains. He said: “We are driven by our passion for a transparent, truly sustainable supply chain. We will do all we can, through our own communications channels and customer conversations, to support the good work and aims of GIB Week and Grown in Britain. There has never been a more important time to buy British, and to buy from sustainable sources.’
